Satyen Bose Road on the Western periphery of the Botanical Gardens, Kolkata, is a primarily residential area with a religious and historical significance. A few key landmarks are the Hooghly River, the Banyan Tree Gate of the Botanical Garden, mosques, temples and the Nazirgunge Ferry Ghat.

Satyen Bose Road is a congested area with over-flowing functions. The aim of the redevelopment proposal was to renew key areas with urban refurbishments and retro-fits to enhance the functionality of the locale while maintaining the character unique to it.

Some of the key refurbished areas area :

1. Banyan Tree Gate - The gate is of historical importance. We wanted to create a walkway that connects the gate to the other side of the residential area . The walking consists of an exhibition area to show the culture of the city. We created a park and meeting space , as well as a small communal reading space.

2. Lal Masjid & Nazirgunge Ferry Ghat - the dilapidated ghat area is re-defined to provide a more holistic public area for visitors to gather and enjoy the view of the Hooghly river or for the ones going to meetiburj ghat on the weekend for the haat, marketspace for the trade overflow and organizing spaces for local vendors encroaching the road sides.

The problem of congestion at the primary shedded entrance of the ghat is addressed in two ways:

A. Shifting the parking under the shed to nearby shrub grown unused empty spaces.

B. Widening the entry by replacing the barricade with bamboo barricades.A waiting lounge with a view of the river and ferry is also introduced for the visitors, locals as well as the crowd waiting for the ferry to distribute the congestion.
