Introduction to Digital Techniques in Urban Design
Drawing: Andrea Benavides Ward I Sreyash Dasgupta I Jiaqi Sun I Vrinda Sharma II Columbia GSAPP
About
The AUDA-IUD+DTECH program aims to introduce Urban Design as an academic discourse to students and recent graduates of Architecture by briefly outlining concepts of Urban Design and it's interwoven premises with the physical, socio-economical, environmental and political fabric of a city along with an introduction to the various digital techniques used in Urban Design.
The IUD sessions are structured to inform students in the coordinated learning of concepts, approaches, expressions, research techniques, and representational strategies of the pedagogy and practice of Urban Design. The program is further designed to assist students with a more profound understanding of the academic and professional possibilities ahead and the choices they can make.
The Intro to Digital Techniques in Urban Design sessions aim to introduce contemporary representational techniques for urban design. It helps to understand how urban designers think, work, and communicate. The primary role of the sessions is to provide an entry point into digital software that explores innovative approaches for urban design. Participants learn the basics of geographic information systems, 3d modeling and video making programs while gaining experience with efficient cross-platform workflows for collaboration.
By combining the conventions of representational techniques, participants are offered opportunities to discover the value of spatial data exploration and analysis (GIS); descriptive and generative 3d modeling (Rhino, Grasshopper) and multimedia storytelling with motion graphics compiled as video (After Effects) into new constructs for envisioning urban space. The instruction and use of multiple formats broadens possibilities for idea creation, development and articulation.
Although the combined Introduction to UD+ Digital Techniques in UD program is designed for undergraduate students and college graduates of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, and Planning, we welcome students from all backgrounds who want to explore the myriad possibilities. The program accommodates beginners and individuals with low digital skills.
